Sheltered moorings in the Olympic waters of Weymouth

Castle Cove Sailing Club is a long established family club located on the northern shore of Portland Harbour, having about 400 members. The Club’s ethos is one of self-help and is very sociable and friendly. The members are generally local (all coming from a 30 mile radius of the Club) and so have a fund of information about the locality, the historic sites, its restaurants and pubs and local non-sailing events. Members will be pleased to share this information with visitors so that the overall experience of being in Weymouth will be interesting and enjoyable.

The clubhouse is on two floors: the lower ground floor has changing rooms with showers and WC’s. The ground floor is a dry area with a meeting room, wireless and screen facilities and internet access, club lounge with its own restaurant/cafeteria, kitchen, bar and WC’s. Doors lead out to the club gardens, with picnic tables and benches, making an excellent site for outside barbeques and the beginning of 2012 will see the completion of a large veranda extending out from the main clubroom. This will provide an outside seating area giving panoramic views of the Harbour and the Olympic Sailing Venue.

The Club Mooring Area extends from the steps (marked on Chart 2268) at the bottom of Old Castle Road in a direction 120° for 2,200 feet (in a line out from the pipeline from Sandsfoot Beach) thence in a direction 030° for 2,800 feet, thence in a direction 300° to the shore. The moorings are swinging moorings in a sheltered location in all but very strong easterly winds and are located amongst club members’ boats giving visitors a chance to mix with them. The moorings are close to the Portland Harbour course for Olympic sailing and the fairway for the competitors sailing out to Weymouth Bay runs parallel with the mooring area giving great opportunities to see the sailors.

During the Olympics a free ferry service will run every day to and from boats to the Clubhouse. The club is within walking distance of Weymouth Town Centre and the Olympic Sailing viewing area.

Visitors will be welcome to use all club facilities including showers and changing rooms and the bar and galley will be open every day during the Olympics serving a range of snacks and meals.
